Herat Bridge, a boy sits atop of a bridge overlooking green fields with mountains in the distance in Herat Province, Afghanistan. I took this photograph during my first tour of Afghanistan in 2006 while I was attached to an Italian Field HUMINT Team (FHT) based in Herat Airport, Herat Province as part of Regional Command West. My role with the Italians was as military interpreter having volunteered to learn Farsi at the Defence School of Languages in Beaconsfield (now closed). This image was taken in June during an intelligence gathering vehicle patrol in Herat Province through the window of the moving jeep. June traditionally marks the start of the “The Wind of 120 Days” which sees hot winds sweep across Afghanistan’s desert steppes and mountains at speeds that can top 100 mph, pummelling the country relentlessly with sand and dust.
All proceeds will go towards the Sulha Alliance who campaign for the rights of former Afghan interpreters who have served with the British military, both to get them out of Afghanistan and supporting their resettlement in the UK.
