I am a London photographer focused on portraiture. Born in Hong Kong to a Chinese mum and British dad, I had an international upbringing living in Hong Kong, China, Japan and Saudi Arabia while I attended boarding school in England and, subsequently, university in Scotland. I started photography as a hobby while serving in the British Army and I always carried a camera along with my rifle, be it on exercise such as the jungles of Belize and the plains of Kenya or operational tours of Iraq, Cyprus and Afghanistan.
After leaving the British Army I turned this passion into a career and became immersed in London’s sartorial scene. For over a decade I have photographed the best of British heritage and craft for luxury editorial titles capturing the devil that is in the details. I am now focusing my camera on portraiture and using this eye for detail which was refined over ten years.
My photographic breakthrough occurred while spending a month in the Belize jungle. With every item scrutinised in regards to benefit versus weight, I limited myself to taking just one memory card and two batteries foreseeing the lack of means to clear the card or recharge the batteries. As a result every potential shot was scrutinised with the camera turned on only if certain of an image and no power wasted reviewing the images; film discipline in a digital era.
Trained by the British Army to observe patterns of life to identify risk I took advantage of my international background and language skills (Mandarin Chinese, French and Farsi) to engage with people of all nationalities. Having left the British Army, I have refocused these observational and inter-personal skills in order to connect with my subjects and create meaningful portraiture. As a former Royal Artillery officer it’s only fitting I shoot with a Canon camera.
I am organised and thorough in my planning and preparation and deliberate in my actions to achieve clean and precise images. As a perfectionist I prefer to take my time and work calmly and methodically while being as efficient as possible. I do not want to simply create content, rather the conscious slowing down of my work flow and focusing on priorities allows me to deliver the best quality product I can and hopefully something you believe good enough to print. I am a firm believer that social media has damaged communication skills, attention span and abuses personal data and I spend as little time as possible on my mobile phone. If you have an upcoming project and are willing to spend the time to achieve goals of quality and high standards please give me a holla. Get in touch with me to discuss consulting and more.
